Français 1
FRENCH 1 is an introduction to the French language and the French-speaking world, and no prior experience is expected. The course is built around communication rather than memorization: students spend class time listening to, reading, and telling stories in French rather than working through vocabulary lists and verb charts. Class is conducted largely in French at a level students can understand, and speaking is never forced — it emerges naturally once enough language has been absorbed.
Over the year we will work through Units 1–6 of the Nous Sommes 1 curriculum, each built around a small set of high-frequency structures and a story or cultural theme. Students can expect to finish French 1 at roughly the Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency level.
Unité 1 — « On dit » (introductions and greetings)
Unité 2 — « On court » (movement and daily activity)
Unité 3 — « Ferme la porte ! » (time, commands, and Morocco)
Unité 4 — « L'université » (school, talents, and future plans)
Unité 5 — « Le Tour de France » (family, emotions, and cycling)
Unité 6 — « Assieds-toi ! » (the body and giving commands)
Please have all of this by the end of the first week:
A notebook or composition book used ONLY for French.
Either is fine, wide or college ruled — but it must be dedicated to this class alone, not a section of a notebook you share with another course.A folder for this class (or a dedicated section of a binder, if you are a binder person).
A black or blue pen, and a pencil.
A red pen or another contrasting color — for corrections.
Plenty of blank note-cards for vocabulary.
Your charged device, every day. We will not be using computers very often, however, you need it to be charged in the chance we do.
Additionally, if you could bring in 1 box of tissues and 1 roll of paper towel for our classroom, it would be greatly appreciated.
If you are not able to get any of these, come and see me privately by the end of the first week and we will find a solution.
